- **Overdue rule:** "If you hear nothing by 9 a.m. the next morning, I'm overdue — but wait until noon before acting, in case I'm just out of coverage."
- **Escalation:** "At noon, call the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office, tell them I'm an overdue cyclist on the marked route, and send them the track link and my last known position."

The biggest change in backcountry communication in decades is sitting in your top tube bag. If your phone is reasonably recent, it can probably reach emergency services by satellite right now.

### Satellite SOS on iPhone

According to Apple's support documentation, Emergency SOS via satellite is available on all iPhone 14 and later models: when you try to call or text 911 with no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, the phone offers to connect by satellite, walks you through a short questionnaire, and uses on-screen guidance to help you aim at a passing satellite. You need to be outside with a **clear view of the sky and horizon** — dense foliage, canyons, and steep terrain can slow or block the connection.

Apple includes satellite features free for two years after activating an eligible iPhone, and per MacRumors, in September 2025 it extended free access for iPhone 14 and 15 models activated before September 9, 2025 through November 2026. Recent iPhones also support Messages via satellite, so you can tell your check-in contact "running late, all fine" from a dead zone — exactly the message that prevents false alarms.

### Satellite SOS on Android

Pixel owners have a close equivalent. According to Techlicious's 2026 guide to satellite messaging, Satellite SOS is built into the Pixel 9 series (except the 9a) and all Pixel 10 models, connecting through Skylo's satellite network when you attempt an emergency call with no coverage.

Carrier-based satellite texting has arrived on top of that. T-Mobile's T-Satellite service, built on Starlink's direct-to-cell satellites, launched commercially in July 2025; according to T-Mobile, it supports free 911 texting for its customers, works on more than 60 phone models, is open to customers of other carriers by subscription, and now carries data for select apps including WhatsApp and Google Maps. Pricing and eligibility shift quickly — check your own carrier before a trip rather than assuming.

If phones can do satellite SOS now, why does dedicated hardware still exist? Because your phone already has four other jobs — map, camera, journal, entertainment — which makes it your most-dropped, most-drained, most mission-critical device. A dedicated messenger is a **separate battery, a separate radio, and a physical SOS button** that keeps working after your phone has died, cracked, or gone swimming at a creek crossing.

With a Garmin inReach, according to Garmin, an SOS goes to the Garmin Response center (the International Emergency Response Coordination Center, formerly GEOS), staffed around the clock: coordinators confirm your location, open two-way messaging, contact the appropriate local emergency services, notify your emergency contacts, and monitor the incident until it's resolved. Phone-based SOS works similarly, connecting you to emergency services or relay centers that pass your messages and location to local dispatch.

When that conversation starts, be ready to give rescuers what they actually need:

- **Who and how many:** riders in your group, ages, relevant medical conditions.
- **What happened:** the injury or problem, stated plainly — "crashed, suspected broken collarbone, alert and breathing" beats a paragraph of context.
- **Where exactly:** coordinates if you have them, plus terrain description — "open meadow west of the creek, room for a helicopter."
- **What you have:** shelter, water, insulation, how long you can stay warm and hydrated.
- **What's changing:** weather moving in, bleeding controlled or not, daylight remaining.

Short, factual, updated when things change. Two-way devices exist so rescuers can ask follow-ups — answer them, then conserve battery. ## Forecast Discipline: The Cheapest Safety Gear You Own

Most severe-weather emergencies start days earlier, as a forecast nobody read. Our routine has three parts:

- **Before the trip:** Pull the NWS point or zone forecast for each day's actual terrain, not the nearest town — a valley town and an 11,000-foot pass are different climates. Note thunderstorm probability, highs and lows, and wind.
- **At every resupply:** Any time you have signal, re-check the next 48 hours. Mountain forecasts go stale fast; the Tuesday outlook you memorized on Sunday is a rumor by the time you're climbing.
- **All day, with your eyes:** In summer mountains, watch the morning sky. Puffy cumulus by mid-morning that keep building into cauliflower towers with darkening bases are the standard prelude to afternoon thunderstorms.

That afternoon pattern is remarkably dependable. According to the American Hiking Society, mountain thunderstorms typically develop in the early afternoon, and the standard advice is to travel early and be off high terrain by around noon.

**Decision rule:** On any day with thunderstorms in the forecast, schedule exposed terrain — passes, ridgelines, open plains — for the morning, and be somewhere lower by early afternoon. If the climb won't fit before noon, it waits for tomorrow.

## Cycling Lightning Safety: There Is No Safe Place Outdoors

Let's say the hard part plainly, because the National Weather Service says it plainly: **there is no safe place outside during a thunderstorm.** According to the NWS, if you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance, and the only genuinely safe options are a substantial building or a hard-topped metal vehicle. Everything a bikepacker can do outdoors merely reduces risk — it never removes it.

That's why cycling lightning safety is really a timing game, played before the storm arrives:

- **Use the 30-30 rule.** Per NOAA guidance, count the seconds between flash and thunder: 30 seconds or less means the storm is within about six miles — time to head for real shelter, not finish the climb. Don't resume riding until **30 minutes after the last thunder**.
- **Don't trust blue sky overhead.** The NWS notes lightning can strike more than 10 miles from a storm's rain. Hearing thunder at all means you're in range.
- **Know your real shelters.** Per the NWS, that means a substantial building with electricity or plumbing — a store, a ranger station — or a car with a metal roof. A picnic pavilion, a vault toilet outbuilding, a shed, a rock overhang, a tent, or a lone tree does not count.

### Caught on a ridge or open plain anyway?

Sometimes the storm builds faster than the forecast promised. NWS backcountry lightning guidance is blunt about what to do next:

1. **Descend immediately.** At the first thunder, get off summits, ridgelines, and open slabs toward lower terrain — on a bike you can descend faster than any hiker, so roll downhill now.
2. **Avoid the tallest things around.** Lone trees, signposts, towers — and stay away from wire fences and other long metal conductors that can carry current from a distant strike.
3. **Spread the group out.** Per NWS backcountry guidance, groups should separate — far enough apart that one strike can't injure everyone, so someone is left to help.
4. **Lightning position, last resort only.** If you truly cannot get lower, NOLS describes squatting or sitting and balling up, arms wrapped around your legs, staying as low as possible without lying flat. NOLS and the NWS are explicit that this only slightly reduces risk — it's a last resort, not a substitute for descending early.

Lay the bike down well away from you and wait it out. The bike is replaceable.

## Extreme Heat: Heat Exhaustion, Riding Schedule, and Water Math

Heat is sneakier than lightning because it degrades your judgment first. Heat exhaustion on a bikepacking trip rarely announces itself; it shows up as slowing pace, irritability, and skipped snacks an hour before it becomes a medical problem.

Know the signs. According to the CDC, warning signs of **heat exhaustion** may include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps, and fainting — and you should seek medical help if symptoms worsen, last longer than an hour, or include vomiting. **Heat stroke** is the medical emergency: the CDC lists confusion or altered mental status, slurred speech, hot skin that may be dry or sweaty, seizures, and loss of consciousness, with body temperature able to rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. If anyone shows heat stroke signs, call 911 immediately, get them to shade, and cool them however you can while help is coming. Confusion is the line: a rider who seems disoriented or "off" needs emergency care, not a pep talk.

Our heat playbook is schedule-first:

- **Dawn starts.** Big miles before 10 a.m. are cheap; the same miles at 3 p.m. are expensive and risky.
- **Siesta through the peak.** From roughly noon to 4 p.m. on genuinely hot days, we stop — real shade, shoes off, food in. Two lost midday hours routinely buy back a whole evening of good riding.
- **Do the water math out loud.** Before every dry stretch: distance to the next reliable water, hours at loaded pace, carrying capacity. In real heat we plan on roughly a liter per hour of hard riding as a rule of thumb, plus a buffer bottle for the flat tire or wrong turn. - **Electrolytes, not just water.** On long hot days, salty snacks or electrolyte mix belong in the resupply plan.
- **Shade discipline.** Every stop happens in shade, even a 5-minute one — sun exposure is cumulative.

**Decision rule:** If someone stops sweating heavily, becomes confused, or can't cool down and recover in shade within the hour, the ride is over — the day is now about cooling and getting medical care.

## Riding Through a Storm: Wind, Downpours, and Flash Floods

Not every storm is a lightning emergency. Sometimes riding through a storm is just wet, miserable, and reasonably safe — and sometimes the rain itself is the killer. The difference is water on the ground and wind in your face.

### Flash floods: the black-and-white rules

Flash floods leave the least room for judgment, and the numbers explain why. According to the National Weather Service's Turn Around Don't Drown campaign, just **six inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult**, and twelve inches can carry away most cars — and flooding kills more people in a typical year than any other thunderstorm-related hazard.

For bikepackers that means two absolute rules:

- **Never camp in a wash, arroyo, slot canyon, or dry streambed.** In desert country, the storm that floods your camp can fall miles away under a sky you never see. Pitch on high ground, every time.
- **Never cross moving floodwater — walking or riding.** You can't judge depth, current, or what the flood has done to the roadbed underneath. Turn around, wait, or reroute. A flooded crossing is often passable again within hours; a swept-away rider often isn't.

### Wind and rain on a loaded bike

A loaded rig catches wind like a sail. In gusty crosswinds, slow down, get low, loosen your grip slightly, and lean the bike a touch into the wind so gusts push you upright instead of into traffic. **Our decision rule:** when gusts move you a full tire-width without warning, or you're steering constantly just to hold a line, we stop riding exposed sections — ridgelines, causeways, open shoulders — and wait or reroute.

## Cold Rain and Summer Hypothermia

The hypothermia cases that surprise people don't happen at 10°F — they happen on a 50°F July afternoon with rain and wind. According to the CDC, hypothermia can occur at cool temperatures well above freezing — even above 40°F — if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or immersion in cold water. A soaked bikepacker descending a mountain pass is all three risk factors on one bike: wet clothing, evaporative cooling, and 25 mph of self-generated wind chill.

Watch for early signs in yourself and your partners: intense shivering, clumsy hands fumbling zippers and brake levers, slurred speech, sluggish thinking. Worsening symptoms — shivering that stops, confusion, drowsiness — may signal an emergency: stop and seek medical care.

The defense is the **stop-early rule**: get warm and dry while you still can, not when you finally must.

- Put the rain shell on **before** you're soaked, and add a warm layer at the top of every long descent.
- When you're wet, cold, and the weather is worsening, stop early — pitch the shelter, get into dry layers, eat, get in the bag. Camping at 3 p.m. feels like quitting; it's the move experienced riders make and beginners wish they had.
- Never ride into evening cold and rain hoping the next town "isn't far." Fatigue, falling temperatures, and darkness stack faster than you can pedal.

Sitting out severe weather isn't a failure state; it's the plan working. Build the retreat into the route before you leave:

- **Mark bailout points.** Note every road crossing, town, and shortcut that exits the route, so retreat is a navigation decision, not an improvisation.
- **Budget a flex day.** One unscheduled day per week of riding means a storm costs you a zero day, not a summit-in-a-thunderstorm gamble.
- **Tell someone the plan changed.** If you sit out a day or reroute, your check-in contact needs to know — otherwise a smart weather decision can trigger a needless search. ## Staying Safe Around Wildlife on the Trail

Staying safe around wildlife while bikepacking comes down to three habits: prevent encounters by managing food and making noise, read the animal in front of you, and respond the way wildlife agencies recommend for that specific species. Most encounters are avoidable, and the ones that do happen are usually manageable if you stay calm and don't run.

That's the reassuring truth underneath a topic that draws dramatic headlines. In practice, the "wildlife" most bikepackers deal with is a farm dog off a porch, a marmot on a hip-belt strap, or a deer frozen in a headlight beam. Serious predator encounters are rare. But rare isn't never, and the right response differs enough from animal to animal that guessing is a bad plan.

The riders who never have a bad encounter aren't lucky. They just do a handful of unglamorous things every trip.

**Learn who lives there.** Find out which species are active on your route and in what season. A ranger district office, state wildlife agency page, or park alerts section will tell you if you're rolling into grizzly country, a bear-closure area, or a stretch known for aggressive dogs. The answer changes what you carry and how you camp.

**Make yourself predictable and loud.** Most animals will leave if they hear you coming; surprising one at close range is what turns a non-event into an incident. Talk, sing, or call out on blind corners and in thick brush, where a fast, quiet bike can close distance before an animal notices you.

**Have a food plan before you pack the first snack.** Decide where and how you'll store food at home, not at dusk with a raccoon watching.

**Ride with margins if you're solo.** Riding alone amplifies every risk; there's no one to help you signal, splint, or scare off an animal. ## Loose Dogs: The Encounter You'll Actually Have

The animal most likely to charge you is somebody's dog. Rural roads and gravel routes are full of them, and a chasing dog is both a bite risk and a crash risk if it tangles your front wheel.

The instinct to sprint away is exactly wrong. According to Road Bike Rider, slowing your pace can de-escalate the situation, because sprinting triggers a dog's chase instinct rather than ending it. Standing on the pedals to outrun a fresh four-legged sprinter just escalates the chase and raises your odds of crashing.

The sequence that works:

- **Ease off and stay calm.** Sit up, slow down, and stop pedaling hard. Removing the moving-prey signal often ends the chase on its own.
- **Put the bike between you.** If a dog closes in, dismount and keep the bike as a barrier. Using your bike as a shield, placed between you and the animal, gives it a wall of metal and rubber to get around.
- **Use your voice.** A loud, firm command like "NO!" or "GO HOME!" projects authority, and many dogs are used to obeying that tone.
- **Don't stare it down or reach out.** Keep the dog in your peripheral vision, back your bike away slowly, and let it lose interest. Never put a hand toward a growling dog's face.

## Bear Country: Black Bears and Grizzlies Are Not the Same

Here, getting the species right genuinely matters: the correct response to one bear is the wrong response to the other.

First, avoid the encounter. Store food properly, make noise in brushy terrain, and never approach a bear for a photo. If you see one at a distance, stop, stay calm, and give it a wide berth. Do not run: running can trigger a chase, and no one outruns a bear on foot or on a loaded bike.

If a bear actually makes contact, the National Park Service gives clearly different guidance by species:

**Black bears.** According to the National Park Service, if a black bear attacks you, do not play dead. Try to escape to a secure place such as a building or a vehicle. If escape isn't possible, fight back, concentrating your kicks and blows on the bear's face and muzzle.

**Grizzly (brown) bears.** For a grizzly, the NPS says to do the opposite: leave your pack on and play dead. Lie flat on your stomach with your hands clasped behind your neck and spread your legs to make it harder for the bear to roll you over. Stay down until the bear leaves. If the attack continues and becomes prolonged, then fight back, focusing on the face.

The National Park Service notes that if any bear, black or grizzly, attacks you in your tent or stalks you and then attacks, do not play dead. This is predatory behavior. Fight back with everything you have.

Not sure which bear you're looking at? Color is unreliable; black bears range from black to cinnamon to blond. Grizzlies have a prominent shoulder hump, a dished face, and shorter, rounded ears. When you can't tell and you're in grizzly range, plan for the grizzly response.

## Bear Spray: Your Most Effective Tool

In bear country, bear spray is the single most effective deterrent you can carry, and it's more forgiving than a firearm because it doesn't require precise aim. According to the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, a review of bear-spray incidents in Alaska found the spray effectively stopped undesirable bear behavior more than 90% of the time.

To make it work:

- **Keep it reachable, not buried.** Mount it where you can grab it in under two seconds, and move it to a hip holster when you're off the bike at camp.
- **Know the range.** The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee notes an effective range of roughly 20 to 30 feet. Deploy a cloud the bear has to pass through, aiming slightly downward toward an approaching animal, and adjust for wind.
- **Practice the motion.** Mime a deployment a few times at home so your hands know the sequence under stress. Never test-fire a live can near camp or gear.

## Moose: Bigger Threat Than Most Riders Expect

Riders routinely underestimate moose. A moose isn't a predator, but a startled or protective one is enormous, fast, and willing to stomp, and in some regions moose injure more people than bears do.

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, cow moose can be aggressive when they have calves in spring and summer, and bull moose turn aggressive and territorial during the fall breeding season. Give any moose a huge amount of room, and never ride between a cow and her calf.

With a moose, running is the right call. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game advises that if a moose charges, you should run rather than stand your ground, and put a solid obstacle like a tree, rock, or vehicle between you and the animal. Unlike a bear, a moose usually won't chase you far.

If a moose knocks you down, the same agency says to curl into a ball, protect your head with your hands, and hold still. Don't try to get up until the moose has moved well away, or it may resume the attack.

## Mountain Lions: Rare, But Know the Drill

Mountain lion encounters are uncommon and attacks rarer still, but cats are ambush predators, and the response is the near-opposite of playing dead.

According to the National Park Service, if you encounter a mountain lion, do not run, because running can stimulate its instinct to chase. Instead, stand and face the animal, make eye contact, and try to appear larger by raising and waving your arms or opening your jacket. A standing, arm-waving human simply doesn't look like prey.

From there, the NPS guidance is to back away slowly while giving the lion room to escape. If it acts aggressively, throw stones or sticks within reach without crouching or turning your back, and speak firmly in a loud voice. If a lion attacks, fight back; people have driven them off with sticks, jackets, tools, and bare hands. A bike held up between you and the cat makes you look larger and gives you something solid to swing.

## Snakes: Watch Where You Reach and Step

Snakes are a warm-season reality on gravel and desert routes, but the danger is easy to keep in perspective. According to the CDC, roughly 7,000 to 8,000 people are bitten by venomous snakes in the United States each year, and only about five of those bites are fatal, largely because most people can reach medical care.

Most prevention is simply not surprising or handling one. Per Poison Control, you should never approach, throw things at, or try to handle a rattlesnake, and that includes a snake that appears dead, because a reflex bite is still possible. Give it distance and walk your bike around it.

Practical trail habits that keep you out of range:

- **Look before you reach or sit.** Check the far side of logs and rocks before you put a hand or foot there.
- **Watch shaded edges on hot days.** Snakes rest in shade at midday and warm on open trail in the cool of morning and evening.
- **Wear real shoes off the bike.** Closed shoes and long socks around camp and tall grass are cheap insurance.
